    The Songs The Morning Sang is an exhibition by and collaboration between poet Ian McMillan and photographer Andrew Brooks. They explore the streets where they live in the early morning to capture some of the strangeness and beauty of the everyday world.

Our Story

Rock Mill Centre opened in Summer 2022 when a small group took on the former Heritage and Information Centre, believing in its community value. Formally launched in March 2023, we are run entirely by volunteers and funded through donations, grants, our café, and room hire.

Now a Community Interest Company, the Centre is a vibrant hub where everyone is welcome to visit, share ideas, and get involved.

    Our volunteer-run café is the heart of the Rock Mill Centre, serving freshly brewed tea, our exclusive Rock Mill Roast coffee, and a tempting choice of homemade cakes and treats. With a few toys for children to play with, it’s a cosy, family-friendly spot to pause, relax, and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere.

    Our small gift shop has handmade items celebrating local talent, from jams, chutneys, and artisan coffee to ceramics, and jewellery. You’ll also find postcards, prints, and Peak District-inspired artwork, perfect for a thoughtful gift. Every purchase supports local makers and the Rock Mill Centre.

    Venue Hire

    At Rock Mill Centre we offer a variety of spaces available for hire from Wednesday to Sunday, perfect for community events, talks, workshops, or exhibitions. Our rooms include a small kitchen, reception area, and a space for larger gatherings. Whether you’re planning a private event, community activity, or educational session, the Rock Mill Centre provides a welcoming, fully equipped venue in New Mills.

Getting Here

 

Rock Mill Centre is located on Rock Mill Lane, New Mills, High Peak, SK22 3BN, right in the heart of the Goyt Valley, surrounded by stunning Peak District scenery.

  • We’re easily accessible from Manchester, Stockport, and Buxton, no parking is available on-site. However, pay-and-display car parks are located in New Mills town centre.

  • New Mills has two train stations: New Mills Central (on the Manchester–Sheffield line) and New Mills Newtown (on the Manchester–Buxton line)

    Both are around a 10–15 minute walk from Rock Mill Centre.

  • Local bus routes connect New Mills with Stockport, Buxton, and surrounding villages. The nearest stop is on Albion Road, just a few minutes’ walk away.

  • We’re right by the Sett Valley Trail and close to the Peak Forest Canal, making Rock Mill Centre easy to reach via scenic walking and cycling routes.

    Full of so many activities and serving lovely drinks and snacks, all in a beautiful location!

    I spent two weeks at the centre installing A River Runs Through It - a floor mural I designed for them to illustrate the features of a healthy river system, part of a number of displays they're working on about local ecology and wildlife.

    It is run by the most welcoming and enthusiastic group of volunteers, full of so many activities and serving lovely drinks and snacks, all in a beautiful location!

    The Rock Mills centre is a great place to stop off for a coffee, a local blend in a cafetière for two only £5 and served by the wonderful volunteers. Anything you need to know about The Torrs, local walks and bus journeys into the Peaks, the volunteers will happily explain. A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere with an ever changing art exhibition. We love it.

    A warm welcome to all

    Had a yummy cake and coffee at Rock Mill today while my little one explored the installation and played with some of the toys available - a very comfortable place to have a cuppa if you have young kids. But I've visited before for various artistic, food and community events, and I love that the space is eclectic and dynamic, to meet the town's needs as well as welcoming visitors to New Mills. We are so lucky to have this gem in our town.

    A great place for locals and visitors alike

    Rock Mill Centre is a warm an welcoming community hub for both locals and visitors alike. Beautiful interactive displays exploring the stunning Torrs river gorge, changing exhibitions from local artists and friendly folk to offer advice on walks and adventures in and around town. Pop in and have a very reasonably priced brew.

    Lovely place! Good to keep an eye on events as some cracking stuff on like story telling, puppet shows etc. I need to get on a mailing list as I seem to miss things. Over the winter months there was soup on a Friday for a donation, and it was delicious. Great cake and not expensive. I think they do lots of other things and always opportunity to get involved. I love that the place exists and recommend it as a nice welcoming place to visit. Worth having a poke round also :-)
